1991

1992

1993 

  • Trustees sign for land 16 July 1993 
  • Club received a £70,000 grant from Foundation for Sports and Arts and also £50,000 from Tetleys to build the club house once a clause was put into the constitution that the club could borrow money. 
  • The building of the club went over budget by $38,000 so total cost was approximately £160K including some outside field and carpark work. 
  • Committee formed
    • These went about getting sponsorship using the yellow pages (the old phone books) ringing around. 
    • “Colours were decided in Yarbrough by Linda of claret and royal blue Betty said like West Ham”. These where in the members club rules in 1993  
    • The pitches had to be cleared of old house bricks from the demolished terraced houses creating the hill at the side of the main pitch. A sponsored brick picking event took place. Bricks coming to the surface happened for the next 20 years having to be dug out and holes generally while games where being played on the side closest to the houses.   
    • While club was being built containers and porter cabins where used. One was used to serve hot drinks and food after games.    
    • Club had its own 7’s tournament combining 13 &11s into teams to play in 2 pools  
    • When the club opened hot food was available after training, there was a pool table, jukebox and arcade machines 
    • Club had a white van with benches down both sides that players went to away games in with all bags pilled down middle. It always seemed to fit all the team in no matter how many players there was. 
    • Subs where £1.50 a week 
    • Grand opening had Kiwis down from Dons who helped in the tournament coaching a team. 
    • Club officially opened 27th November 1993 by Roger Millward MBE 
    • On 27th November 1993 the club had its grand opening. The event was supported with representatives from the Rugby Football league, a strong New Zealand contingent from the Dons and off course the facilities were officially opened by the legend Roger Millward MBE.  
    • With regards to the badge, in the beginning the club only had junior players so the original badge was of a lion cub and this was later years to the badge that we see now

    • R Green agreed to set up the coaches committee 
    • It was proposed to change the constitution and call the club Doncaster Toll Bar A.R.L.F.C 

    1994 

    • There was only 47 Yorkshire junior clubs in 1994 and only 2 had more age groups (8) than Toll Bar’s (7). 
    • C Oakes joined I Tattersall as 1 of our 2 junior refs 
    • Kev jones invited down to create an open age team to complement the youth teams 
    • Ray Green being the clubs first try scorer at open age level 
    • U13s 5-day 3 game Blackpool tour. Although it was U13s with siblings and those who wanted to come from older ages the players aged from 9 up to about 16 most getting some sort of game time. 
    • U11’s 3-day tour and game to Whitley Bay  
    • First Tarts & Tramps night 10th December 
    • New Years eve party Fancy Dress/Disco/ Buffet held for a fiver 

    1995 

    • New Years day 3 course lunch £5 per head 
    • Club changed brewery’s to pay off old debt and final bill to Trustees for building the club. 
    • Club hosted first 5k round the pit top. Chris Firth organised and brought some of his runner friends. This was also used as a sponsored run by the juniors. 
    • Whole Club trip to play Isberg Celtic 27th May. One coach breaking down It’s been mentioned that this was set up by Warners (Brian & Gary) as they had dealings with both clubs. 
    • Around this period you could go the club for Sunday lunches. Linda (Jones and Wilson) running it. Club invited dons away players families to have them when dons at home. 
    • During this time the club had on site security with 1 man and his dog living in a tourer caravan in the compound. 
    • In the Mid-90s the club had bonfires and fireworks. This happened in what’s now the main pitches in goal. It continued for several years until the insurance became too much 
    • Club registration for 95/96 season was £10. Third family member playing to be free. 
    • Disagreement of final payment for building the club was eventually agreed. 
    • November the club had hypnotist night 
    • 2nd Tramps & Tarts night hosted in December 

    1996 

    • Around this period with junior rugby being in the winter teams played in 7s tournaments one of the biggest being Churwell. Our teams generally did well in these and where fun days out for the players. 
    • Teams had to look for different pitches to play home games while drainage was fitted on the pitches. Skellow, Adwick and Magnet pitches where all used. 
    • Training sessions took part in Toll Bar playground as it had lights. A generator and portable lights were used on Toll Bar Brickyard football pitch on the way out of the village. If it was still light enough the field on the left as you came into Toll Bar from Bentley was used. Once J Oakes chased someone on a moped down who was waiving in between kids as the trained and pulled keys out of ignition. 
    • A £9000 fund from foundation of sports and Arts was used to do the drainage 
    • The club set a 15-year plan to get the Open age in the National Conference 
    • In April the Open age play Eggborough Eagles in the Doncaster cup at Rossington Miners Welfare winning it. 

    1997 

    • Club bids for lottery funding to complete £220,000 of upgrades which included car park, fencing pitch, 4 more changing rooms and a sports hall. All needed due the expanding teams one of the largest clubs in Yorkshire at the time.

    • Open age 2nd year in the Doncaster cup final losing to Moorends 26-4 
    • 2nd team scrapped as league change meant 2nd teams had to go in the same division which coach K Jones believed the team would be out of its depth 
    • Open age start 97/98 season in division 3

    • Gala Day on 16th August 

    1998 

    • Open age play the Doncaster Dragons at Toll Bar 
    • Toll Bar win 2 of the 5 Bi – Annually hosted 7’s tournaments 12’s and 15’s nobody wanted to come and play against the successful 16’s of that year 23 clubs came brining over 50 teams 
    • 98/99 season open age in YL div 1 
    • Lights to be turned to keep off seeded pitches (It was agreed 4 more lights where needed but could not afford it) 
    • August Sponsored Fun Run U8/9’s 2 Laps of the pitch 10-12’s 3 Laps 13/14 4 Laps 15s up Full run. G Hinks donated a Gallon of Beer for the event. Run had poor attendance C Firth who organised it said he would give it 1 more year and abandon it if the numbers where low. 
    • 7’s tournament organised by M Tattersall and J Oakes. A delay on medals caused some fuss. I Dyson apologised to the teams involved 
    • Toll Bar Gala Day held on 31st August at the club it helped the club raise over £600. 
    • Club was robbed nearly £700 taken 
    • Parkside Golbourne visited with 7’s, 10’s, 11’s, 13’s and 15s giving the club a big boost in revenue. 
    • Discussed if we should continue with lottery funding due to lack of support off parents and lottery advisor had left and was waiting for a replacement 
    • It was identified that 4 more floodlights where needed at a cost of £200 each 
    • Doncaster Schools U16’s to playing some home fixtures at Toll Bar 

    1999 

    • The club had 140 players 
    • Jan 99 Club still looking for lottery funding of £450,000. This time looking to get floodlights, medical and fitness testing equipment 
    • Claims the club was the 2nd biggest in Yorkshire 
    • In May at BelleVue the open age played Armthorpe in the Doncaster Continuation Cup winning it 26 – 14. 

    2000 

    • Open age was sponsored by channel 5 with N Pease being a big influence on the deal after going on 3 peaks walk 

    2001 

    • K jones stepped down as Open age coach and D Noble took over 

    2002 

    • Junior rugby left BARLA 
    • P Lawton takes over as Open age coach 

    2003 

    • In April a French Select 13 came to play the U16’s and U18’s  
    • Adwick RU come to play from the club. Several players helped them out from time to time when the open age did not have a game. There was one occasion where one player got sent off for toll bar went across the ditch and pull a shirt on for Adwick. 

    2004 

    • Open age had league V Union game half of each beating them at both codes 2003-7 

    2007 

    • 2007 was probably the worst year for the club with the floods in June. 
    • A season away teams playing a neighbouring ground to fulfil home fixtures. Open age used Wheatley hills RUFC when it was available to play and train. The team also had some games at Hall Cross School. 
    • Club was re-furbished with a new look lighter and more spacious. 
    • New toilet block built. 
    • Charity dinner at Keepmoat with guest speaker Barrie Mcdermott. Used to raise funds for club and pitch 

    2008 

    Club officially re-opened by Ellery Hanley 29th April 2008 

    New Outside toilet block built 

    The club hosted South Yorkshire service are game against Rochdale at U14’s and 15’s with several of our players in the teams 

    2009 

    • P Green becomes club Development Manager 
    • U14’s go to France to supposedly play their 14’s as usual they tried playing players who looked in their 20’s 
    • P Green & J Cross organised an open day fundraiser in August raising £1300 
    • Possible talk or archery practise being held at the club 
    • Idea floated of clubbing together to pay off CCJ’s then paying them back monthly 
    • Club launched a website P Green and J Cross involved 
    • It was decided bar was to shut at midnight unless patrons would pay bar staff wage and they were happy to stay 
    • It was recommended that team photos go on the walls every year, but it did not see fruition. 
    • In October P Green & J Cross received the Gold Club Mark for the club at the Keepmoat. 

    2010 

    • After a baron spell for silverware the open age had a cup win against Chesterfield at Upton 
    • Subs £10 a month registration £10 Family club membership £20 single £10 
    • Around this time the open age lead by G Millward started a lottery to help with funds. The lotto was very successful paying out several £1000 winners over its time.

     2011 

    • First attempt at summer rugby having 2 teams first team and one in the merit league. P Green taking the first and G Millward the merit. (K Ramshaw got sponsors for a lovely pink kit.) 
    • Talk of the club extending and having a community hub with a fitness instructor 
    • G Milward asks for the pitch in the top left to be turned 90 degrees to allow more training space. 
    • Player’s shocked as a TB player assaults ref 
    • Chairman wants to close the club in September and leaves for another 
    • Club starts talks about becoming a charity or limited company. 
    • Conversations are had with C Hall about Dons taking control of the business side of the club and using it as a feeder system with them suppling the coaching development and the club looking after the juniors. 
    • Had sports man dinner to raise funds 
    • July brewery wanted to foreclose the mortgage due to what they said breach of contract and the club owed them £33.5K to settle the debt 
    • AGM 
    • It was calculated at this time the club operating costs of £25000 and would need £10000 in fundraising to subsidise the short fall from subs 
    • Subs £10 a month or £108 lump sum, £10 to sign on, Club membership £20 family or £10 single parent. 
    • Asked that all teams funds go through the clubs accounts  keeping separate under 1 account and not have their own 

    2012 

    • Juniors move to summer rugby 
    • CMS Yorkshire league folded, and all teams went to Pennine league 
    • Window security guards installed to make it more secure changing the appearance 
    • Majority of the U17’s team transferred to Bentley 
    • U13’s team left the club on mass to an Askern based team 
    • Individual team managers introduced to take burden off coaches 
    • New committee starts to come in place 

    2013 

    • U15’s lead by G Warner suited and booted in pink kit, skins and Xblade boots went to France 
    • Open age train at Hungerhill for space under the flood lights 

    2014 

    • W Morton post first video to YouTube channel of Open age away at Bentley 
    • Open age win Pennine First Division 
    • Open age win Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy against West Leeds at Batley 
    • U12’s First team from the club to compete at Butlins Festival in Skegness 
    • 2014 Free Press Amateur Team of the Year 

    2015 

    • With not enough players for U18’s and not enough space in the 1st team a 2nd team was created again to accommodate the influx of eligible players 
    • Open age play an under 23’s V over 23s 

    2016 

    • With numbers of juniors declining a new avenue was started Toll Bar TOTs along with Accelerate coaching. With a long-term view of creating future junior teams 

    2017 

    • Santa dash introduced. 
    • Bigger social media presence started by C Oakes 
    • Tour to France May C Lawton coaching the under 15s 
    • Garrity Clan and others put flood lights around the training pitch 

    2018  

    • Club trip to Scarborough for juniors 
    • 25th anniversary grand ball, lead by L Lawton 
    • Wall of Honour introduced. See further down. 
    • Thrown out of Yorkshire Cup for fielding 3 ineligible players against Upton in semi final which Upton then pulled out of before the final. 

    2019 

    • In March the Open age win the Presidents Cup Final against Sharlston 40 -16 at Upton. 
    • Club decides to move open age to summer rugby and the YML 
    • Butlin’s Rhinos festival with U7’s 
    • Club did 12hour touch and pass charity event for Eve Merton. Where the open age played a different team every hour from all different ages, sex and ability. 
    • First summer camp out put forwarded by the committee  
    • Christmas Party held 
    • Boundary fence starts to be erected. 
    • 2019 fitness club held for women in partnership with accelerate  
    • 2019 try to launch girls 12-14s team coached by ex-junior player and England international Rhiannon Marshall 

    2020 

    • Fixtures where heavily hit with Covid only 3 weeks at the start and end of the junior season played 
    • Plans for an a extensions where drawn up to extend the club with a large function room and changing rooms. Covid hit and prices went through roof and the person funding the project pulled out

    2021 

    • New venture creating a master’s team at the club Lead by C Oakes and a full fixture list established by S Robinshaw 
    • Exercise equipment installed along edge of ditch. 

    2022 

    • The juniors went down to Spurs to play some games then get paraded around the stadium before the Challenge Cup. 
    • Heavily involved at Keepmoat for the world cup as mascots and flag bearers 
    • Samoan internationals came to junior training session and invited the club to their captain run 
    • Hosted the Yorkshire Masters festival for the first time 
    • Some masters plays put on a Tattersfield tails about their time at the Dons D Noble, K Jones, S Piper R Green 
    • New floodlights on main pitch side put up lead by a group of the masters players. 
    • Junior teams at Butlins festival 
    • Introduced Lou’s kitchen (Food and a rugby match) 
    • The outside bar was finished 

    2023 

    • Open age first venture into the Challenge Cup losing out to the Navy in the first Round 
    • 4 Junior teams at Butlin’s U11, 10, 9 & 8 for Rhino’s festival 
    • Hosted the Yorkshire Masters festival 
    • 30-year anniversary Grand Ball 
    • Decided to make a bigger push with our You tube presence. The channel was renamed and branded with the club’s colours increasing subscribers to over 600 having thousands of views and hitting the first threshold for monetisation. The channel started to use the YouTube shorts to promote the club and channel 
    • M Norris set up golfing days to have some fun and raise funds. 
    • The Garrity Cup was introduced between the Masters and open age after the annual game due to clan Garrity representing both sides. 

    2024 

    • Year starts with a bang winning the 1st round of the Challenge Cup against Wigan based Club Ashton Bears. Then losing to a good West Hull side in the 2nd round. 
    • Open age back at Batley in the YML Cup Final 
    • The June trip to play at Hindpool Tigers staying at Lakeland over the weekend was a massive success. 6,7,8,9,10,11,13’s and Masters all played fixtures. Master minded by M Norris taking over 100 players parents and family. 
    • Girls squad has been established by J & G Rankin welcoming girls of all ages to get a foot hold and establish a team to compete in 2025. 
    • M Stables aided by volunteers going out into schools to coach and spread the word of the club and Rugby League 
    • 9th July the club fields its first all girl team coached by J Rankin and G Rankin. The team had 6 players and played in an under 9s round Robin having 3 games.
